It wasn't any surprise to either family when Amelia fell pregnant, but as it were, the stubborn Carusos were loathe to admit that their luxurious, transient lifestyle wasn't a stable one. Robert and Amelia spent more time in the air than they did on the ground, and a child had to learn to stand and walk somewhere. When Lauren Amelia Caruso was born, it was with great fanfare and concession that Robert announced he'd be taking on the role of CFO for Caruso Travel; deciding to ground his family permanently. All it took, he'd later claim, was his screaming daughter. Far more persuasive than the screaming of his personal assistant, anyway.
Despite the announcement, Amelia, it turned out, was the one taking primary care of the newest, most-delicate Caruso project. Robert did what he knew how to do; provide. He worked in the study, and he worked hard to ensure that Caruso was a name on every computer in the UK, the United States, and beyond. The Carusos were a proud family, a wealthy family, and the (exceptionally high) roof over their heads meant they were doing everything right, didn't it? Not exactly. Lauren was around three years old when her mother fell to the ground at afternoon tea. The word doctors kept using was 'stroke'. The Caruso child was far too young to know what words like 'debilitating' meant, too young to understand why mum wouldn't play anymore, or why dad wouldn't come outside. All Lauren knew was that her family wasn't the same, and when Amelia passed away a few weeks later, Lauren still couldn't identify why it'd happened. Her young age at the time was probably for the best: she'd never remember the weeks where Robert couldn't bear to face her.
Over the years, and under her father's (distant) wing, Lauren grew into a model young lady. She was mild-mannered, quiet, easily amused by books, and could find herself out on walks for hours. To Robert, a man who'd buried himself into his work more than ever before, she was a dream. To everyone else, something seemed to be a little bit off. It was odd that Lauren, daughter of one of the biggest commercial minds of present times, much preferred to have dirt under her fingernails, to nurse birds with broken wings and collect rocks. That was when Robert's new girlfriend Jacqueline entered the picture. Lauren needed a positive female influence, Hugo (the family butler) had said once, and Jacqueline was more than willing to shoulder the responsibility.
After years of playing the doting stepmother, Jacqueline'd been exposed, numerous times, to the inner workings of Caruso Travel. Suffice it to say, Robert's increasingly-bleeding heart, careless mind and fleeting attention-span did not bode well for business. When Jacqueline went after the family assets in a move that'd sliced betrayal throughout the home. Errol Caruso, brother to Robert and CEO of Caruso Travel, was not pleased, to say the least. In preparation for the worst, Robert took every avenue to gather what money he could to cushion what would be his daughter's future. Errol ex-communicated his brother, ousted him from his position (for the better of the company, he'd claim) immediately prior to drawing up an IPO at Jacqueline's suggestion. This move would split the Caruso family in half. Lauren only returned from boarding school to the family's Maui compound, plucked from her environs when word of her father's disappearance went public. Robert Caruso had been shamed so badly that he'd removed himself from the world, hidden himself away somewhere with no means of contact. Life had become too much for the lone Caruso to deal with on his own, it seemed.
The life that Lauren knew, the patchwork of care and love holding together moments of inexplicable loss, was snipped neatly at its seams again. She was all too thankful to wind up back at school after the press had died down, and was inappropriately eager to get far away from England for university. Lauren was an exemplary student in Hawaii; Hermione-Granger-jokes abounds. She cocooned herself away in textbooks, presentations, and museums -- all things at which she excelled: Lauren had no desire to pursue business, nor involve herself in her family's increasingly-tangled financial affairs. She chased anthropology and art history instead, two tangible things that satisfied her curious mind without miring her in sullied reputations or the pain that was back in England.
Five years later, With more sessions of family counselling and hours with a social worker than she'd ever like to admit, Lauren's friends whisked her away for a trip to South America on her twenty-first birthday. It was to see Peru, they said. Wasn't that where those mountain cities were? Is that where those adorable alpacas in the memes you love lived? Yes; it was also where Lauren was separated from her tour group, an oversight from -- ironically -- a company that Caruso Travel had once ended up hiring and Lauren's own curiosity. The introverted, slip of an heiress was left on her own for seventy-two hours in the South American scrub, 'missing heiress' headlines and all, injured and fending for herself. While doctors have explained that her spotty memories of the incident are due to a sustained concussion and post-traumatic stress, to this day, she still experiences severe panic attacks, and has taken large steps to mitigate them.
In more recent years, Lauren has continued taking numerous steps to normalize her life. She's beautiful, her money is plentiful, her past is mysterious, and socially, she's a bit of a firecracker; by all standards, she's a normal twenty-four year old. Hugo (still going strong in his eighties, bless him) is her remaining familial tie at the compound, and is all too thrilled at the idea of Lauren's teaching climbing lessons at the local gym. It keeps her occupied, he says, much like coordinating the building of a climbing wall and training course near the poolhouse keeps him as such.
Personality-wise, Lauren can be aloof -- lost in a daydream or idea -- but on the whole, is charming and dynamic, never without some short quip or opportunity to offer an impish grin. She is a survivor at her core; life seems hell-bent on convincing her of otherwise, but Lauren'll be damned if she doesn't drag everyone else to safety, even if it kills her. It's in her blood, after all. She's a Caruso.

She wasn’t meant to survive, but she did. It’s a mantra that’s incidentally reverberated itself throughout Lara Croft’s history. Born the daughter of Lord Richard and Lady Amelia Croft, Lara wasn’t anticipated to make it out of the womb, much less to become who and what she did. As a whip-smart child, introverted and aloof in her schooling, a bored Lara was frequently taken on archaeological digs with her father, Richard and his team. Though Richard was often too busy to tend to his daughter (his friend Conrad Roth ended up taking on more of a surrogate father and guardian role), Lara still found solace in books and her own elementary explorations. Her own brightness led to early matriculation, and despite her family’s wealth, Lara insisted upon paying her own way through University College London; she worked odd jobs as a bartender, photographer, and museum clerk, among other things, to make ends meet. She did it, at least for a while, and came out a bit more grounded than she would’ve been had she not taken a smoother path.
The expedition to Yamatai, home of the Japanese sun queen, Himiko, would change everything. From the start, the trip itself seemed to have been cursed. There were funding problems, ridiculous demands, and horrific weather during travel. It was in the final stretch that the Endurance, Conrad Roth and Angus Grimaldi’s baby of a ship, went down hard in a hurricane, marooning all of its occupants (appropriately enough) on the shores of Yamatai with no means for escape. All who set foot on Yamatai did not return. Not only had Lara survived near-drowning, capture, and assault, but she’d later go on to fight the mythological Oni — the goddess Himiko’s storm guard and vigilant soldiers virtually on her own. Himiko, it turned out, was wildly more human than anyone had anticipated, and in defeating her, Lara freed her remaining friends from the island.
After a period of unrest following the traumatic experience in Japan (Lara's best friend Sam in prison and Lara, herself, in court-ordered therapy), Lara pursued her father’s research on immortality in an effort to restore his reputation and the family name. In her own research, it was discovered that her father was being watched by Trinity — a religious organization hell-bent on controlling the future of mankind and erasing any evidence of supernatural relics from history, citing them as blasphemy and heresy. Richard Croft’s (and subsequently Lara’s) pursuit of the Divine Source and race against Trinity took the narrative through bleak locations like Syria and Siberia, all the way to the disappearing city of Kitezh, otherwise known as the Russian Atlantis. With an all-out war raging between the Remnants (Kitezh’s deathless citizens) and Trinity’s soldiers, Lara put her own life on the line in the name of saving what it meant to be human, stating that she wasn't afraid to be the next Croft to die for the cause. It was after this ordeal that Lara was able to come home to England, to reluctantly reclaim her inheritance and Croft Estate from her uncle, and to put the pain regarding her father’s choices to rest.
At present, Lara and Jonah Maiava are currently planning an expedition to South America. A more in-depth history for Lara can be found here.

• climbing has become lauren's lifeblood. after the disappearance of her father and the hiking accident that'd landed her in the hospital, she wasn't up for team sports or socializing while she rehabbed. stubborn and angry at the world, lauren took to climbing. she claims it regularly helps to clear her head, and that she appreciates the time alone. there's something cathartic in solving problems all on your own. literally.
• is awful with relationships. her therapist has claimed that lauren's introverted tendencies are to blame, and that her avoidance of serious relationships is a defense mechanism. lauren will confidently tell you that she has no interest in commitment, and it's true: she's got a heart of gold, but it isn't about to be tied down anywhere. her abandonment issues are visible from miles away.
• she is the heiress to robert caruso's amassed fortune. before he disappeared, robert went to great pains to ensure his troubled daughter would want for nothing. while he was sure that lauren is perfectly capable of taking care of herself (lord knew that), he'd sullied the family name with reckless business decisions, and had otherwise damned her for any adult pursuit she'd attempt to chase. the sale of caruso travel was held up for years by errol caruso himself, robert's brother and ceo of the company. within the last three years, however, the sale has gone through, and lauren was named heiress to the caruso fortune.. and subsequently the hawaiian compound.
• the caruso family has had the same butler for over fifteen years. his name is hugo, and he's the closest thing lauren's ever known to a grandfather. he's a good man and is going strong in his early eighties. lauren once locked him into a walk-in freezer in a fit of teenage angst. thankfully, it was the summer. thankfully, robert let him out ten minutes later.
• has an intense fear of drowning or being buried alive/suffocation. this is partially why lauren enjoys 'fresh air' as much as she does.
• drives a two-door 2013 jeep rubicon and owns a navy blue 2000 yamaha trx-850 motorbike that she's working on refurbishing. not a great bike by any means, but it gets her around.

• has an ugly scar on her left side, about five-six inches from her belly-button. it's from a puncture wound sustained while in south america when she was 21. don't her ask about it, and she won't tell you. honestly, she can't remember how it happened; she's blacked it out.
• the word 'joy' is tattooed on the outside of her right wrist.
• lives in a caruso-owned compound on maui. it's a gated collection of a house, a garage, a poolhouse, and massive garden. robert caruso was not a poor man, and his life insurance policy coupled with the caruso travel assets have made and ensured the security of his family (or what's left of it). lauren does live alone in the main house, and frequently uses the pool and garden. she's in the process of having a climbing wall built, much to hugo's ire; it isn't finished yet, but she's found some joy in her own at-home training course. sidenote: her shins are perpetually banged up from her poor attempts at free-running. every single security camera is turned off during these endeavors, because nobody wants an actual record of the seven times they've fallen flat on their face.
• the frequently mentioned 'accident' was a hiking fiasco in south america. while on a tour of ancient incan grounds, lauren accidentally separated herself from the group. she ended up falling a decent distance, and sustaining multiple injuries as a result. undiscovered and injured, lauren was left alone for a full seventy-two hours (awful 'missing heiress' headlines included) while search parties set out to find her. a cell phone would solve that quickly, you'd think. it would, if she hadn't left it with one of her friends. upon being found, lauren was found to have a large puncture wound in her side; it, and it's unfortunate sidecar infection, required months in a hospital to rehabilitate, along with a sprained ankle, a concussion, and a missing incisor. on the whole, her memories of this event are extremely limited; doctors say that she's blacked them out.
